How To Be a 5 Star Host Even If You Live In An Apartment
Planning to throw a party at your place but afraid of being branded as the worst host of the century by your posse? Afraid that your party will be regarded as bland because you live in an apartment?
While true hospitality is often subtle (you don't know you’re getting it until you come to a realization that you are already feeling totally comfortable, as if you’re right at home). Sometimes pulling a little trick or two from up your sleeve can makw you into the 5 star host that you are aiming to be.
Start With A Good Place
First thing’s first, a good review comes down to having a good place. No matter what the venue is, be it a fancy restaurant, a posh apartment, or a practical AirBnb… It will all boil down to having that “wow” factor that will leave your guests feeling right at home.
The cleanliness of the place matters, without a doubt. After all, it starts with the basics such as the cleanliness of your apartment and playing good tunes. If you already have those two points covered, then all you need to worry about is fine tuning. Everyone is different and has their own definition of what is comfortable, but as a good host, it is your job to create the vibe that will work for everyone.
As a host, you may wonder how on earth will you be able to gauge what’s going to work for everyone and what’s not. Well, it is best to set your guests’ expectations, if necessary. By doing this, your guests can pitch in their thoughts which will help you cater to the needs of everyone in attendance.
Consider Moving Stuff Around
Don’t be afraid to move around your furniture to free up some space if you think your apartment is too small for your group. Moving or pushing your furniture up against the wall can be a quick fix. Doing this will definitely give more floor space that can be used for mingling.
If you have an extra room in your apartment where you can stash your stuff or some furniture, consider doing so instead having your furniture pushed against the wall. Now you have more space that can be used for dancing, games, or mingling.
Choose A Specific Place for Coats And Bags
Coats and bags, especially if they’re huge, can be a hindrance within some apartments. So it is a good idea to keep them out of the way and out of sight. You can tell your guests that they can hang on to their smaller items.
It’s probably a good idea to have a specific place for coats and bags as some people can get rowdy during parties (you can never tell especially when the alcohol starts to kick in). Having the coats and bags of your guests all over the place (imagine a faux fur coat lazily draped on your lamp, a tote bag or two piling up on your coffee table) will just add to clutter. Remember, since this is a party, you’ll want to have as much space as possible for your guests to move around.
Get Creative With Chairs And Pillows
There’s a probability that you won’t have enough chairs for your guests. Why not consider forgetting the idea of having enough chairs for everyone and just throw some pillows on the floor? Doing this will provide enough seats for everyone while allowing them to feel comfy while mingling around.
As for the tables, you can distribute them around or push all the tables you have in your apartment — from that coffee table to kitchen table and any item you think can be used as a dining surface — into a large table area. Don’t worry if the tables do not perfectly align, there’s actually a beauty in eccentric furniture art.
Create The Mood In Different Ways
You probably thought “go big or go home”. Going for upscale or fancy is not actually easy, especially if you live in an apartment with limited space and you have pillows and ‘eclectic tables’ to work with. However, you can make up for it in other ways, like going overboard with the decor.
Use fancy real plates and utensils. Make pretty drinks. Hand out party favors. These things can make your party memorable and ‘personalize’, a perfect way to distract your guests from anything they might think that is lacking in your party.
Have Food Readily Available And Ready To Go
What’s a party without good food? As at any party, the kitchen is probably right in the middle of things especially when you live in an apartment and have limited space.
Make sure the foods that you will be serving are already available as soon as your guests arrive. And make sure that the kitchen is ready for use.
Living in an apartment with limited space is certainly not a con when you’re throwing in a party. In fact, you can use it to your advantage with the right tricks to make everything work in your favor.
What is most important is that you are able to throw an incredibly memorable party and your guests (and of course, you as host) have fun.
